Bergamot, named after the Italian city of Bergamo, is a citrus plant native to Calabria, Italy.
The bergamot tree (Citrus bergamia) grows up to about 5 meters, with fruits about 7 centimeters in diameter, slightly smaller than oranges.
Bergamot essential oil is extracted by cold-pressing the peel of unripe fruit.
Unlike other citrus oils, it is composed mainly of linalool (approximately 16%) and linalyl acetate (approximately 34%) instead of limonene.
Bergamot essential oil contains a total of 175 identified components, producing a complex and rich fragrance among citrus oils.
You can first notice a refreshing lemon-orange scent, followed by a delicate floral fragrance, and finally, a herbal-balsamic aftertaste. Bergamot essential oil is also used as a key flavoring in Earl Grey tea.
It's one of the most important top notes in perfumery. However, bergaptene, a low-volatile furanocoumarin found in bergamot, can cause skin photosensitivity, so it's best to avoid using it in sun care products.
