Cypriol Oil is a natural essential oil extracted from the roots and rhizomes of Cyperus scariosus, a plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family and native to India. Also known as Nagarmotha, it is characterized by its deep, earthy woody aroma with distinctive smoky nuances. Darker and richer than many conventional woody essential oils, Cypriol adds depth and complexity to fragrance compositions.
Cypriol grows primarily in central India, particularly in moist areas and along riverbanks. Its aromatic underground roots and rhizomes are harvested, cleaned, and dried before the essential oil is obtained through steam distillation. The oil typically ranges in color from golden brown to dark brown, with variations in appearance and aroma depending on its origin and distillation conditions.
Cypriol Essential Oil has a rich, earthy and woody character reminiscent of damp soil and aged wood, complemented by subtle spicy, smoky, and leathery nuances. Like Vetiver and Patchouli, it possesses a distinctive earthy quality, but tends to be smokier than Vetiver and drier and darker in character than Patchouli. As the fragrance develops, it reveals a smooth, lingering woody base that enhances the overall depth of a composition.
Cypriol is primarily used as a base note in perfumery, adding richness, depth, and longevity to woody, amber, and chypre fragrances. It is particularly valued in Oud accords, where it helps recreate the dark, resinous, and woody character associated with agarwood. It also blends well with Vetiver, Patchouli, Cedarwood, and Frankincense. With its powerful and distinctive aroma, even small amounts of Cypriol can bring remarkable depth and character to natural woody fragrance compositions.
